AOL-Netscape Launches Massive “Digg-Killer”

ns_logo_150x44

On Thursday, AOL’s Netscape property will no longer be just another portal - it’s being converted into a Digg-clone with non-techy categories. They did manage to get the non-Tech categories up before Digg.com. Digg.com has plans of opening up non-tech categories as well and some screen-shots were released this week.

This project is being headed by Jason Calcanis, the CEO of Weblogs Inc (now owned by AOL), but I don’t know if his advice is being ignored or if he has just lost his touch. So far, the beta is riddled with usability problems. The blatant advertisements on the website are also a big turnoff. First impressions matter a lot and right now they’ve gone ahead and shown off an ugly, advertisement-riddled, problematic mess. They can still redeem themselves by following the advice of users… but all my feed back was
thrown out because there was an “error submitting feedback”. whoopsie.

However, these problems will get fixed eventually and Netscape.com is already an established website with around 811 million page views a day. This is great news for non-techy sites who need traffic.
