I hope that this rumor turns out to be accurate. Apparently, Netflix is working on a new way of transferring your movies to you. Instead of putting all your movies in a pre-paid envelope and then dropping it in the post box, you’ll have to… do nothing. That’s right. All you’ll do is go to your computer and choose the movies that you want and they will start transferring straight in to a proprietary set-top box. Once the movies have been downloaded, you’ll just go ahead and watch them to your hearts content
and then you can just order new ones.

Currently, the main issue that many online movie vendors are facing is that of piracy. A computer can be used to capture all the data being sent to it and then saved for ever or redistributed by pirates. This causes concerns for movie executives and they don’t allow the latest movies to be available for downloading. This new set-top box mostly eliminates the piracy issue and I’m sure movie execs will be pleased with this, thus, allowing us to download from Netflix’ full movie selection.

Users would add movies they want to watch to their rental queue online as they do now, and those movies would then be downloaded to the boxes overnight rather than shipped through the mail.
